A wedding in Manikganj took an unusual turn on Thursday night when a severely injured groom exchanged garlands with his bride while lying on a hospital bed.

The marriage of Abhijit Saha, elder son of Arbind Saha of Chan Mia Lane, had been fixed long ago. Just days before the event, Abhijit was critically injured in a road accident and admitted to Afroza Begum General Hospital.

With the consent of both families and approval from hospital authorities, the wedding was held in a special room of the hospital to honour religious traditions and keep the scheduled date.

Guests described the atmosphere as emotional as the groom, lying on the bed, formally tied the knot with his bride. Holding hands, the couple pledged to remain together through joy and sorrow.

“I never imagined such a beautiful wedding could take place inside a hospital. Since the date had already been fixed, we went ahead with the ceremony as planned,” said Abhijit’s father, Arbind Saha.

One of the central rituals of a Hindu Bengali wedding, the saat paak or seven circumambulations was performed with the bride circling the groom as he lay on the bed.

The rare wedding has since drawn widespread attention on social media, with many calling it a memorable example of love and commitment.
