Anwar Hossain (40), who was critically injured in a shooting over a narcotics-related money dispute in Badda, finally succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday after a month and 8 days of treatment.
DMCH Police Camp In-Charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed the death to Times of Bangladesh.
Anwar, originally from Hizla upazila in Barishal, lived with his cousin Abdul Jabbar in Badda’s Boithakhali area where he worked at a cattle farm. His wife and son remain in their village home.
On May 8 at around 11:30pm, assailants shot Anwar multiple times in Badda’s Anandnagar Tekpara area. He was initially treated at DMCH before being transferred to private hospitals, undergoing several surgeries.
Jabbar alleged the attack stemmed from Anwar’s ongoing feud with local drug dealers including Nayan, Salauddin, and Delwar over profit-sharing.
Badda Zone Assistant Police Commissioner HM Shafiqur Rahman stated, “The shooting resulted from a narcotics money dispute. Despite our requests, no case was initially filed by the family. Now that Anwar has died, family members have pledged to file a case, after which we’ll proceed accordingly.”
