In a gruesome incident in Chattogram, a man allegedly murdered his wife and dismembered her body into 11 pieces following a domestic dispute. Although locals initially detained him, he managed to escape by cutting through a grilled window of their 10th-floor apartment.
The incident occurred around 12:30am on Thursday at the FJ Tower in the Paharikha Housing Society, located in the Oxygen area under Bayezid Police Station.
According to police and locals, the couple Sumon and Fatema Begum had rented the 10th-floor apartment of the FJ Tower just one and a half months ago. They had an eight-year-old son named Sifat. On Wednesday night, neighbours reported hearing unusual noises and a foul smell coming from the flat.
The building’s caretaker said, “It was raining heavily. Amidst the noise, we heard strange sounds from their flat. When we went to check, Sumon initially refused to open the door. Once he did, we found Fatema’s dismembered body parts scattered across the apartment. We locked Sumon inside, but he managed to flee by cutting through the window grille.”
Locals said Fatema had briefly left the flat after moving in but later returned. Reports suggest there had been ongoing marital disputes between the couple.
Kadir, a local resident, stated, “When we recovered the body, the door was locked from the inside. This type of brutal murder is beyond comprehension. We demand exemplary punishment for the killer.”
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Mahmuda Begum said initial evidence indicates that the murder resulted from a family dispute. “Though the husband is currently on the run, efforts are underway to arrest him,” she said.
Bayezid Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Kamruzzaman confirmed the horrific details stating, “Fatema (32) was murdered and mutilated by her husband Sumon, who used a knife and a machete to dismember her. Her flesh was cut from the bones, and the 11 body parts were found scattered on the floor.”
The victim’s body has been sent for autopsy. Police confirmed that Fatema was originally from Cuymilla Sadar South, while Sumon, a professional driver, was from Noakhali.
No case had been filed at the time of reporting. Their son Sifat was at a relative’s house during the incident.
