A shopkeeper in Kushtia’s Daulatpur was seriously injured after a young man allegedly bit off his ear during an argument over cigarettes on credit.

The incident happened on Monday morning, 11 August, in Pachamadia village under the upazila’s Sadar union. It became public on Tuesday after the victim’s family filed a case with Daulatpur police station.

Locals said Sumon Hossain, 20, son of Asaduzzaman of the same village, went to the shop of neighbour Amanuzzaman, 45, to buy cigarettes on credit. The shopkeeper refused and asked him to clear previous dues. An argument followed, during which Sumon allegedly tried to attack the shopkeeper with a sharp weapon but failed. He then bit off the shopkeeper’s right ear.

The injured Amanuzzaman, son of the late Ramjan Mondol, was taken to Kushtia General Hospital by locals.

The victim’s elder brother Nazmul Islam said in his complaint, “When my brother refused to give cigarettes on credit, Sumon bit off his right ear. We immediately took him to hospital.”

Daulatpur police station Officer-in-Charge Solaiman Sheikh said they had received the complaint and would take action after investigation.
