A man was injured in a shooting carried out by miscreants in the capital’s Mahakhali area on Thursday night.
The injured, Rafiqul Islam, 40, works on a contractual outsourcing basis at Dhaka Dental College Hospital in Mirpur Section 14.
He is currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, widely known as Pongu Hospital.
The shooting took place in front of the old kitchen market in Mahakhali at around 10pm.
Rafiqul’s sister, Rasheda Begum, said he lives at the IPH quarters in Mahakhali and works at Dhaka Dental College Hospital.
On Thursday night, he was standing in front of the old kitchen market when a group of five to six men arrived on motorcycles. She alleged that one of them was identified as Zahidul.
The attackers opened fire indiscriminately at Rafiqul before fleeing the scene. One bullet hit his left thigh.
Rasheda said family members rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 11pm after learning about the incident.
Doctors there provided primary treatment before he was transferred to Pongu Hospital for further care.
She added that the family still does not know why the attackers targeted her brother.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that a man with a gunshot wound from the Mahakhali area was brought to the hospital at night.
He said the victim sustained a bullet injury to his left thigh and was later shifted to Pongu Hospital by relatives after receiving initial treatment.
