A madrasah teacher named Gazi Shariful Islam, 38, was brutally hacked to death on Sunday afternoon in Sahapur village under Khesra Union of Tala upazila, Satkhira.
The attacker, Raju Gazi, 36, was immediately beaten to death by an enraged mob at the scene.
The incident occurred around 4:30 pm when Raju, reportedly mentally unstable, called Shariful Islam to the front of the madrasah and suddenly attacked him with a sharp machete, killing him on the spot.
Shariful was a teacher at Shahapur Madrasah and hailed from Harihar village. He was the son of the late Maulana Alimuddin Gazi. The assailant, Raju, was the son of Golam Mostafa alias Khokon Gazi of the same village.
According to former Khesra Union chairman SM Liaquat Hossain, Raju had a history of mental illness. On Sunday afternoon, he lured the teacher out of the madrasah and launched a sudden and violent attack.
Hearing the victim’s cries, locals rushed to the scene, restrained Raju, and beat him to death in a fit of rage.
Alhaj Abdul Ghaffar, founding president of the Shahapur Dawatul Quranul Hafezia Madrasah, said Raju was also a known drug addict. Earlier in the day, he had been harassing students in the madrasah area. When the students complained to Shariful, the teacher warned Raju, triggering the fatal assault.
Raju’s brother-in-law Didarul Alam stated that Raju was mentally unstable and that they would not be filing a case over the incident.
Police from Tala Police Station arrived shortly afterward and brought the situation under control.
Officer-in-charge Md Mainuddin said that both bodies were sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
No formal complaint has yet been filed in connection with the killing. The incident has cast a pall of fear and sorrow over the community, with fellow teachers, students, and villagers left deeply shocked.
The situation in Sahapur remains tense.
