Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam stated that if anyone calls for a hartal (general strike), the police force will perform its duties professionally to protect people’s lives and property. He emphasised that the police are always prepared to handle any situation.

When asked about a social media post circulating about a hartal called for July 20 by several organisations, including the Awami League (whose activities have been banned by the interim government), the IGP reiterated that the police are always ready to safeguard public safety.

However, he clarified that he has no knowledge of any rumors spreading on social media regarding the matter.

Speaking to Times of Bangladesh, the police chief said that the police are currently focused on the situation in Gopalganj, where a curfew is currently in effect. He assured that the police will take all necessary measures to maintain peace and normalcy across the country.
