Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated on Sunday that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared for the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
“There is sufficient time before the elections, and preparations are underway. Law enforcement personnel are being trained to ensure the elections are safe, fair, and peaceful. Overall, there will be no difficulties in conducting the elections,” the adviser said.
He made these remarks during a media briefing after chairing two meetings at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat – the Core Committee on Law and Order and a special session on law and order in Dhaka Metropolitan and adjacent areas.
The adviser revealed that the special meeting included all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, relevant commanding officers of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and designated army officials. “We sought their comparative analysis of previous and current law and order situations. They reported significant improvement in the current law and order scenario,” he added.
Responding to journalists’ queries regarding violence in Gopalganj, the retired general clarified, “No mass arrests are being conducted. However, we’ve instructed that perpetrators must not escape justice while ensuring innocent citizens face no harassment. Action is being taken proportionally against wrongdoers.”
When questioned about law enforcement’s role in Gopalganj, he emphasised, “They’re performing duties as per superiors’ directives. Your ability to question me as journalists demonstrates freedom of expression – this is the beauty of democracy. However, expressions should avoid offensive or indecent language.” He added, “Truth ultimately prevails in democratic practice.”
The briefing was attended by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister’s Principal Advisor on Home Affairs Md Khoda Baksh Chowdhury and Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Nasimul Gani.
