In a major step toward smart infrastructure, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Bangladesh’s Roads and Highways Department (RHD) on Tuesday launched an $8.85 million project to modernise bridge maintenance using cutting-edge Korean technology.

Titled “Capacity Development of Smart Maintenance Technology of Bridges under RHD,” the initiative aims to enhance the safety, durability, and efficiency of Bangladesh’s bridge infrastructure through real-time monitoring, advanced inspection systems, and capacity-building for local engineers.

The fully KOICA-funded project was formally inaugurated at a ceremony at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka, attended by the Korean Ambassador, KOICA Country Director Taeyoung Kim, and senior officials from the ERD, Planning Commission, and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

“This is more than just a project—it’s a commitment to shared progress,” said Mr. Kim. “We are proud to support Bangladesh in building smart, sustainable infrastructure by transferring Korea’s proven expertise in bridge safety management.”

The initiative will equip RHD with state-of-the-art tools to detect structural risks early, improve long-term maintenance, and cut operational costs—aligning with the country’s vision for a Smart Bangladesh.

Officials said the project marks a new milestone in over 30 years of Korean development cooperation with Bangladesh, encompassing sectors such as education, ICT, health, and transport infrastructure.

The project not only boosts technical capacity but also symbolises a deepening bilateral partnership rooted in innovation, knowledge sharing, and people-centred development.

As Bangladesh works to modernise its transport network, the KOICA-RHD collaboration is expected to set new standards in safety and efficiency for public infrastructure.
