BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has demanded the preparation of a complete list of victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
She has also called for speedy trial, formal recognition of the victims and rehabilitation of their families.
She made the remarks on Tuesday while virtually joining a discussion titled “Student-People’s Uprising 2024: National Unity and the Democratic Journey”.
The BNP organised the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka from her residence Firoza in Gulshan.
“Over the past 16 years of the Awami League rule, they have been engaged in a conspiracy to establish one-party governance by destroying democracy through repression, enforced disappearances, and killings.
The fall of fascism has begun through the July movement.”
The BNP leader paid tribute to the martyrs of the movement and expressed sympathy for those who were injured.
Emphasising the need for institutionalising the new opportunity for democracy, the former Prime Minister said, “Employment must be created, public safety ensured, and the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh must be protected at all costs.”
“The blood of the heroes of the July uprising and the tears of the mothers must not go in vain.”
Calling for unity, Khaleda Zia said, “We must fulfil the dream of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and build a Bangladesh that realises the hopes and aspirations of millions.”
