Kerry Kennedy holds talks with Ali Riaz on National Consensus efforts

President of Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Kerry Kennedy met with Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission Professor Ali Riaz on Wednesday to discuss the commission’s initiatives for fostering inclusive democratic dialogue in Bangladesh.

The meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban centered on the commission’s strategic plan to develop a national charter that would outline a democratic roadmap for the country.

Professor Riaz informed Kennedy that the first phase of consultations with political parties is nearing completion, with preparations ongoing for wider national dialogues incorporating diverse stakeholders, reports UNB.

He emphasised that a democratic system is crucial for protecting citizens’ rights, maintaining rule of law, and establishing an independent judiciary capable of delivering justice at all levels.

Kennedy voiced strong backing for the initiative, describing it as a “timely and essential endeavour” to build political and civic consensus. She commended the commission’s methodology and pledged her organisation’s support for its success.

Catherine Cooper, Asia Staff Attorney of RFK Human Rights, and Angelita Baeyens, Vice-President for International Advocacy and Judicial Proceedings, were also present at the meeting.
