Authorities have given green in favour of opening 16 flood gates on Monday afternoon at Kaptai Lake after water levels surged past the danger mark, posing a serious threat to surrounding areas. The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) took emergency measures as the lake’s water level reached 33.5 meters (110 feet), well above the danger threshold of 32 meters (105 feet). The sudden rise was attributed to heavy monsoon rains and increased water flow from upstream sources.

With the flood gates now open, officials warned that downstream areas in Rangamati and parts of Chittagong could face flooding in the coming hours. The Kaptai hydroelectric power plant has reduced operations to ease pressure on the dam, while local authorities have begun alerting residents in low-lying zones to evacuate to safer locations. Engineers are closely monitoring the dam’s structural integrity amid concerns that continued high water levels could lead to further risks.

Md. Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Executive Engineer of BWDB, said, “We had no choice but to release water in a controlled manner to prevent potential disaster. Our teams are working to minimize damage and ensure public safety.” Transportation disruptions are expected in flood-prone areas, and fishing and tourism activities around the lake remain suspended until further notice.

The BWDB will provide another update later today as the situation develops. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert and follow official instructions.
