Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, has expressed disappointment with the July Declaration, stating, “This declaration does not adequately reflect the aspirations of the nation’s people.”
On Tuesday afternoon (August 5), the declaration was read out by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at an event held at the South Plaza of the Parliament. Taher was among the attendees, along with National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam.
Following the reading of the declaration, Taher remarked, “I believe the July Declaration has largely sidestepped the core demands of the movement. It lacks clarity – when will implementation begin? Tomorrow? The day after? There is no clear timeline. Moreover, we had hoped for constitutional incorporation, which did not happen.”
He further criticised, “They said the next government would implement it, implying this interim administration will do nothing. Yet, the responsibility lies with this government. We are deeply disappointed by how such a critical issue has been brushed aside – and so is the nation.”
In contrast, NCP welcomed the declaration, with Nahid stating, “We welcome the July Declaration. After a thorough review, we will issue a formal response. For now, we congratulate its adoption.”
