National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has welcomed the official reading and recognition of the July Declaration as a positive development.
While sharing his initial reaction on Tuesday evening, he clarified this wasn’t NCP’s formal response. The party will issue an official statement after thorough review.
Earlier at 5:30pm, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus read the declaration at Parliament’s South Plaza, with Nahid representing NCP alongside other party delegates.
When asked for his reaction, Nahid stated: “We’ve long awaited official state recognition of this declaration. As such, we have received the Declaration positively.”
“Our aspiration remains dismantling the fascist system to establish a new democratic state upholding human dignity and equality,” he continued. “Fulfilling this pledge collectively – not just through youth but everyone – is our tribute to the martyrs.”
The NCP leader noted the government drafted the Declaration through multi-party consultation: “We believe it broadly covers key issues. We hope its commitments will eventually be constitutionalised.”
Acknowledging they hadn’t previously reviewed the document, Nahid added: “We’ll study it meticulously, consult other parties, then present our formal response.”
He emphasiSed the need for comprehensive discussions on both full constitutional implementation and future political commitments outlined in the declaration.
