Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has expressed optimism that a ‘July Charter’, based on consensus among all political parties, will be finalized and presented to the nation in July 2025. The declaration is expected to outline a shared national commitment to core reforms and democratic principles.
In a televised Eid-ul-Adha address to the nation on Friday evening, Dr. Yunus elaborated on the initiative and its background, referencing the student-led uprising of July last year.
“You may recall,” he said, “the students who led the July uprising had proposed a declaration. They had also invited me to be part of it. I suggested that such a declaration would carry more weight if it was made collectively by political leaders, civil society, and other national stakeholders. That is how the idea of a comprehensive July Charter emerged.”
Yunus explained that the July Charter will serve as a national pledge, reflecting the reform proposals made by the Reform Commission, and will list those proposals on which political parties have reached consensus.
The Chief Adviser emphasized that institutional reform remains a non-negotiable national priority, and that the charter will serve as a signal to the international community of Bangladesh’s united democratic intent.
He noted that the formation of the Consensus Commission, which facilitated agreement among political parties, was an unprecedented and bold move.
Recalling the intense and transparent discussions among political parties—including live televised sessions—Yunus praised all parties for their patience, cooperation, and goodwill.
He also pointed to the emergence of a new political culture in Bangladesh, one that he hopes will take permanent root through the upcoming election. If this momentum continues, he believes the country will be better equipped to resolve future political crises peacefully and constructively.
“With the collective effort of all people—youth, students, farmers, fishermen, homemakers, workers, professionals, artists—we can organize a fair and flawless election that lays the strong foundation for a new Bangladesh,” Yunus said.
He concluded with a promise: “Very soon, we will finalize the July Charter and present it to the nation as a roadmap for our democratic journey and national unity.”
