Preparations are in full swing for the upcoming central and hall parliament elections at Jahangirnagar University (JU), being held after 33 long years. The election has awoken the vibrancy of student life across the campus. However, candidates risk losing their nominations if any violations of the election code of conduct occur during campaigning.
Under the main rules of the election code of conduct at Jahangirnagar University, students must take prior approval from the Election Commission to arrange any meeting or gathering on campus. Gatherings of more than 25 students are not allowed, and no outsiders can take part in campaign activities. At the same time, teachers, officials, and staff of the university have been strictly instructed not to influence or favor any candidate during the election.
Moreover, according to the code of conduct issued by the JU Election Commission, if a candidate is found to be involved in drug addiction, criminal or financial crimes, indiscipline, or sexual offenses and it is proven, his candidacy will be cancelled.
Election campaigning cannot begin two weeks before the election. Microphones or sound systems cannot be used. Candidates cannot make defamatory or hateful statements against other candidates. As per the campaign guidelines, candidates are strictly prohibited from putting up posters or festoons on university halls, walls, gates, offices, faculties, vehicles, or electric poles. Additionally, distributing leaflets, setting up pandals or arches, using religious sites, creating graffiti, or employing AI technology for campaigning have all been banned.
Election expenses have been limited to specific amounts. Candidates for the Hall Parliament elections can spend a maximum of Tk 4,000 and candidates for the Central Parliament can spend a maximum of Tk 7,000 respectively.
It is to be noted that the collection and submission of nomination paper for hall and central election of JUCSU ended on August 21, 2025, at 4pm.
