The body of a former leader of Juba Dal, BNP’s youth wing, was recovered from a field near his home in Nawabganj upazila, Dhaka, just an hour after a police team conducted a raid to arrest him early Sunday morning.

The deceased, identified as Amzad Hossain, 50, was a former general secretary of the Juba Dal’s Nawabganj unit.

His body was found around 5am in a paddy field near Mridhakanda village in the Majhirkanda area.

Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of Nawabganj Police Station, confirmed the incident and said they went to arrest Amjad Hossain at his residence at 4am as he was facing a warrant over cheque fraud case.

When officers failed to locate him, they left the scene. Shortly afterward, Amzad reportedly left home, possibly to attend Fajr prayers at a nearby mosque.

About an hour later, locals found him lying in a field near the house and informed his family. He was rushed to Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

News of his death quickly sparked reactions on social media, with several posts alleging foul play. Leaders and activists of the Juba Dal, along with family members, gathered at Amzad’s residence in protest.

Police later returned to the house to investigate the incident. Authorities said Amzad was named in over 20 cases, including politically motivated ones, and had an outstanding warrant related to cheque fraud.

The body has been sent to the morgue at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination, police confirmed.

Brother of the deceased Zahidul Islam said, “Even if police came to arrest him, how did he end up dead in a field? We don’t understand what happened.”

His elder daughter, Asha Akter, said, “There were injuries on my father’s face and near his eyes. Whether he was murdered or not, we can’t say for sure yet.”

Police say they are investigating the incident.
