The Jatiya Party (JP) has announced its commitment to overcoming long-standing divisions within the party, with key leaders reaffirming their unity and vision for the future ahead of the upcoming national council.
In a press conference held in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Friday, Acting Chairman of one faction of the party, Anisul Islam Mahmud, along with Co-Chairman ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader and General Secretary Mujibur Hossain Chunnu, declared the beginning of a new chapter for JP.
Anisul Islam Mahmud stated, “The 10th National Council of Jatiya Party will be held tomorrow (Saturday), marking the beginning of a historic transformation for the party.”
He added that, as per a court order, the current Chairman GM Kader has been restricted from carrying out organizational activities, which is why, under the party’s constitution (Article 20(2)(b)), he has assumed leadership as the Senior Co-Chairman. He also mentioned that the decision to call the council was made unanimously during a Presidium meeting on August 5.
“We intend to bring back democracy within the party. We will eliminate controversial sections and ensure a joint leadership model,” Anisul further emphasized.
He clarified that, according to the Election Commission’s directive, the council was supposed to take place by June 30. However, due to venue issues, the date was delayed. Despite this, the council is being held without further delay to maintain democratic principles.
In his written statement, Jatiya Party General Secretary, Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu, confirmed that the council will take place at the Emmanuel Party Centre in Gulshan on Saturday, with thousands of councilors and delegates from across the country attending the event.
Co-Chairman ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader spoke about the legacy of the late founder of the party, Palli Bandhu, highlighting his contributions to Bangladesh’s development, particularly in the areas of rural governance, women’s empowerment, and poverty alleviation. “Palli Bandhu was not only a politician but a statesman and a key architect of modern Bangladesh. His reforms have solidified the foundations of our country,” he said.
Ruhul Amin also reiterated the Jatiya Party’s commitment to the ideals of the Liberation War and expressed the party’s resolve to live up to the expectations of the people, especially the youth, in the aftermath of the 2024 student-led uprising.
Other central leaders, including Syed Abu Hossain Babla, Nasrin Jahan Ratna, and Nurul Islam Millan, were also present at the press conference.
