The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has revealed that over 200 journalists and media workers have been killed since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023.
As of September 16, 2025, preliminary investigations indicate that at least 201 media professionals have lost their lives amid the ongoing violence in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon, according to a report by Committee to Protect Journalists.
Among the 199 journalists killed by Israeli forces, 193 were Palestinian journalists in Gaza, while six were Lebanese journalists. Additionally, two Israeli journalists were killed by Hamas. CPJ also documented 152 journalists reported injured, two missing, and 92 arrested during the period.
The CPJ asserts that Israel’s actions against journalists are part of a broader effort to silence the press, particularly those documenting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Human rights organisations have described these actions as genocidal.
The CPJ has called on the international community to take immediate action to halt the unlawful attacks on journalists, grant international media unrestricted access to Gaza, and hold Israel accountable for its actions.
In response to these ongoing threats, the CPJ urges the international community to act swiftly to ensure the safety of journalists and protect the freedom of the press, especially in conflict zones.
The organisation also demands independent investigations into the killings and other human rights violations occurring in the region.
