Joint Tax Commissioner (Departmental) Md Jahangir Alam has been sent on forced retirement following allegations of accepting a large sum of bribe.
On Tuesday, an official notification signed by an assistant secretary of the Internal Resources Division under the Ministry of Finance confirmed this decision.
The notification stated that Md Jahangir Alam, joint tax commissioner of Tax Region-16, had completed 25 years of service.
Since the government deems it necessary for public interest to retire him from government service, he has been granted retirement under the powers vested in Section 45 of the Government Service Act, 2018.
As per regulations, he will also receive retirement benefits, the notice mentioned.
It has been reported that while serving as deputy commissioner in Tax Region-18, Jahangir Alam allegedly waived Tk 266 crore in taxes in exchange for a Tk 50 lakh bribe. In contrast to the Tk 299 crore tax claim from Karim Group, he deposited Tk 33 crore into the government treasury.
There are also allegations that Jahangir gave Tk 5 lakh to one of his subordinates. Despite these allegations, he was recently promoted to the position of joint tax commissioner.
