A joint forces operation has begun in Gazaria, Munshiganj, to apprehend those responsible for attacking a temporary police camp in the Guagachia Union’s Jamalpur village. The attack, which occurred on Monday, was followed by intense gunfire, and security forces have cordoned off the area while conducting searches.
The operation began on Tuesday afternoon as the joint forces intensify their efforts in the Guagachia area, which is now under heavy surveillance by the security forces.
The attack on the temporary police camp was carried out by members of the Nayen-Piyas group, a local river pirate gang, as part of their ongoing criminal activities.
On Monday evening several members of the gang, traveling on five to six motorised boats, launched a surprise assault on the camp. The attackers first detonated four to five grenades near the camp before opening fire from the boats at the police station. Police responded with gunfire, and after facing resistance, the attackers fled the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that, after the attack, the river pirates retreated under police pressure. The gang members, who have been active in the area for several months, have been involved in illegal sand mining, extortion, and territorial disputes. Their criminal activities have led to several killings, including that of notorious river pirate Babla, shooter Mannan, and others over the past few months.
In response to the rising violence and criminal activity, the temporary police camp was set up on August 22 in the Jamalpur area to combat the pirate groups. However, these groups have consistently opposed the presence of the police, attempting to undermine the efforts to establish control over the region.
