JETRO and BGMEA discuss boosting Bangladesh-Japan trade

Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Country Representative Kazuki Kataoka and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mahmud Hasan Khan met on Wednesday at the BGMEA complex in Dhaka to discuss enhancing trade cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.

The meeting focused on expanding market opportunities for Bangladesh’s garment sector in Japan, according to a press release from BGMEA. Discussions included Bangladesh’s garment industry, Japan’s market potential, and the possible impact of U.S. tariffs on Bangladesh’s exports. Both sides emphasized the growing importance of their trade relations.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan highlighted Japan’s untapped potential for Bangladesh’s garment exports, stating, “JETRO’s active support is crucial to realizing this potential.” He urged JETRO to take an active role in unlocking these opportunities for Bangladesh.

The meeting also covered ongoing Japan-Bangladesh Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations, with BGMEA emphasizing the need for Single Stage Rules of Origin to simplify export processes. Both parties agreed on the importance of organizing matchmaking sessions and exchange visits for garment entrepreneurs.

Kazuki Kataoka acknowledged Japan’s role as a key investment partner and stressed the need for improved logistics and connectivity to enhance trade. JETRO continues to support Bangladesh-Japan trade by encouraging Japanese investments and helping Bangladeshi products enter the Japanese market, according to the statement.
