Jatrabari fire: Husband dies after wife, child fights for life

A man, who sustained burn injuries in an explosion reportedly from a gas leak at a building in Jatrabari area of the capital, died on Thursday evening, bringing the death toll from the incident to two.

Ripon, 40, died while undergoing treatment at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery while his wife Eti succumbed to her injuries on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier, Ripon, his wife and their daughter, aged less than five years sustained serious burn injuries in fire around 1:40am occurred on the ground floor of a six-storey building on Shahid Faruk Road in Jatrabari.

According to the Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, Ripon had suffered 70 percent burns, his wife Eti suffered 45 percent burns. He said their daughter Rafia remains at the institute with 90 percent burns and is in critical condition.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police outpost, said that the fire might have been initiated after a mosquito coil was lit triggering an explosion reportedly to have resulted from accumulated gas inside the flat.
