The Detective Branch (DB) of Jashore District Police have arrested seven individuals and recovered Tk 32.05 lakh in connection with the armed robbery of Tk 35 lakh from a Nagad distributor in Monirampur upazila.
The robbery took place on Tuesday morning when an alleged Tk 55 lakh was looted from a moving private car in broad daylight. The incident had occurred in the Jamtola Donar area on the Rajarhat–Chuknagar regional road.
At a press briefing on Wednesday at the Jashore Superintendent of Police’s office, Additional Superintendent of Police Noor-e-Alam Siddique said the distributor’s driver, Yusuf Ali Saju, was involved in orchestrating the heist and is among those arrested.
The other arrestees have been identified as Roni Gazi, Sujon Islam, Imdadul Gazi, Nasim Gazi, Sagar Hossain, and Sohel Rana — all from the Jhikargacha upazila.
“During preliminary interrogation, all suspects confessed to their involvement,” said ASP Siddique, adding that legal proceedings are underway to present them in court.
Police stated that Tk 16.55 lakh was recovered from the house of Imdadul Gazi, while another Tk 15.50 lakh was seized from Sujon Islam’s residence. Authorities also confiscated two machetes and the bag used to carry the looted money.
One of the critical leads in the investigation was a motorcycle traced to suspect Sagar Hossain. His arrest and subsequent confession enabled police to track down the rest of the group.
Addressing discrepancies in the reported amount stolen, ASP Siddique clarified, “Initially, Nagad officials claimed Tk 55 lakh had been looted. However, this figure has not been verified. Our investigation confirms the stolen amount was Tk 35 lakh.”
However, according to initial reports from Tuesday, Nagad’s Monirampur Office Supervisor Abu Sayeed had confirmed to several media outlets that the amount stolen was Tk 55 lakh, based on information from senior officials.
