Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to reclaim its political registration and traditional electoral symbol, the “Scales” (Dāripalla), shortly, a senior Election Commission official confirmed on Wednesday.
“Jamaat-e-Islami will soon regain registration. Necessary steps are being taken as the Commission has made a decision,” Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah told reporters after a meeting at the EC Secretariat in Agargaon. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin chaired the session attended by all commissioners and senior officials, reports UNB.
Regarding the symbol, Sanaullah clarified: “A policy decision has been taken to restore Jamaat’s symbol.”
When questioned about the Ishraque Hossain controversy, the commissioner stated: “EC’s mandate ends with gazette publication of results. Administering oaths falls beyond our jurisdiction.” He emphasised that the Commission had “fulfilled all constitutional obligations” in recent polls.
The development marks a potential turning point for Jamaat-e-Islami, which lost registration after a 2013 High Court verdict deemed its charter with the constitution.
