Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has demanded that the upcoming national elections be held based on the July Charter to avoid a repetition of past failed elections.

Addressing an “Election Responsibility Gathering” at Munshirhat Union in Chauddagram upazila, Cumilla, on Saturday morning, Taher warned that failing to uphold the spirit of the July Movement would amount to betrayal. “Those who refuse to accept the July Charter will betray the spirit of the July Movement,” he said.

Jamaat-e-Islami has been advocating for the national polls, scheduled for February 2026, to be conducted under a system of proportional representation (PR). Taher, however, expressed openness to discussions with the government and the Election Commission regarding the implementation of the PR system.

The event was attended by Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mu Mahfuzur Rahman, Upazila Jamaat Secretary Belal Hossain, Cumilla Central Medical College Principal Shafiqul Rahman Patwari, and union Jamaat leader Shakawat Hossain Shamim.
