In a courtesy meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami’s central leaders met with South Korean Ambassador Park Young Sik at Jamaat-e-Islami’s central office in Mogbazar on Monday.
The meeting saw the two sides discussing the upcoming national elections, proportional representation (PR) and trade relations between two countries.
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, in the meeting, said, “If reforms are carried out under honest leadership through a credible electoral process, we believe it is possible to build a democratic and corruption free Bangladesh with a sustainable economy.”
According to him, the ambassador showed interest in understanding the country’s political landscape, ongoing reform proposals and the roadmap for the upcoming national elections.
Party leaders confirmed to the ambassador that Jamaat-e-Islami were the first political party to proposal holding the next national elections before Ramadan. He also assured the South Korean ambassador that most political parties are open to the proportional representation (PR) system.
Open discussions on industrial cooperation, economic engagement, and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and South Korea were also the topics of the courtesy meeting.
Speaking at a press briefing later, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Golam Parwar said, “The South Korean ambassador praised Bangladesh’s growing economy and identified it as a country with great economic potential.”
The others present at the meeting were Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Central Committee member Matiur Rahman Akand and Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair.
