Jamaat-e-Islami has made several demands for the reforms of the country’s education system.

A Jamaat delegation, led by Jamaat-e-Islami Central Nayeb-e-Ameer Professor Mojibur Rahman, presented the demands during a meeting with Education Adviser CR Abrar at the Secretariat on Monday.

After the meeting, he told reporters that the country’s education system had been pushed toward destruction under the previous fascist government.

“We had about an hourlong discussion with the Education Adviser and highlighted the actual situation,” he said.

“Our first demand was the nationalisation of educational institutions and teachers. If education is the backbone of nation-building, then teachers are the backbone of education. If teachers are weak, the nation cannot be built.”

Other demands include quick inclusion of non-MPO (Monthly Pay Order) teachers under the MPO scheme, ensuring timely disbursement of retirement benefits for retired teachers, bringing independent Ebtedayee (primary-level) madrasa teachers under the MPO scheme, formation of a committee comprising representatives from all types of educational institutions across the country to formulate a syllabus that meets public expectations.

Prof Mojibur said the Education Adviser listened to their demands attentively and assured them that further discussions would be held to make appropriate decisions in the future.

The Jamaat delegation also included the party’s Central Executive Committee member and Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South, Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, among others.
