The bypass surgery of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, who was suffering from heart disease, has been successfully completed.

The operation began at around 8:30am on Saturday at United Hospital in the capital and was performed under the leadership of cardiologist Dr Jahangir Kabir.

After the surgery, Dr Jahangir Kabir told the media, “The Jamaat Ameer’s surgery was completed smoothly. Although three bypasses were planned, four were performed without any complications to prevent future issues.”

The doctor further stated, “His surgery was timely. Naturally, the blood flow in his coronary arteries was not optimal, so the right procedure was done at the right time.”

Dr Kabir also mentioned that the Jamaat Ameer expressed gratitude to Bangladeshi doctors, adding that such a major surgery has inspired the country’s medical community.

Jamaat-e-Islami has requested well-wishers to avoid crowding the hospital to ensure proper medical care and to pray for the leader’s recovery.

Earlier, on Friday afternoon, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said at a briefing at the party’s central office in Mogbazar that Ameer Shafiqur Rahman had five blocks in his arteries – three major (around 86% blockage) and two others (60% and 67%).

Shafiqur Rahman fell ill after attending Jamaat’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on July 19 and was later admitted to a private hospital. Initially, doctors suspected dehydration, but an angiogram at United Medical College Hospital on July 30 revealed blockages in his heart.
