Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has expressed confidence that an acceptable election will be held between December this year and June next year. He made the remarks during the party’s central Majlis-e-Shura meeting in Dhaka on Saturday morning.

“The government is not compelled to hold elections, but we want to cooperate. I urge all organisations to support the government,” he said.

He suggested that the interim government should convene an all-party meeting to prioritise national interests in resolving the current crisis.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the interim government about announcing an election roadmap. On Friday, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan told journalists, “The chief adviser has indicated the likely election period between December and June. There is no room for deviation from this timeline.”

Against this backdrop, the Jamaat ameer stated, “The previous government’s actions have created public apathy toward elections. Meaningful reforms are needed for credible elections, yet no roadmap has been presented to the people.”

He warned, “If the election lacks credibility, the people will reject it.”

The Jamaat leader also called for responsible behaviour regarding discussions about the military, cautioning that “the country will plunge into darkness if justice is not served for those killed and disappeared during the July uprising.”

On issues like the proposed “humanitarian corridor” in Rakhine and foreign use of Chittagong Port, he urged the government to exercise caution: “Such decisions should involve consultations with all stakeholders while considering national security.”
