Cristiana Girelli fired Italy into the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semi-finals with a stunning last-minute header, sealing a dramatic 2-1 win over Norway on Wednesday. It marks Italy’s first appearance in the final four of the tournament since 1997.

Girelli broke the deadlock early in the second half, redirecting a well-placed cross into the net. Norway responded through captain Ada Hegerberg, who equalised in the 66th minute after earlier having a penalty saved. Yet, it was Girelli who had the final say, rising above the defence in the 90th minute to nod home and spark jubilant scenes among the Italian players and supporters.

Italy dominated possession early on, creating several chances, while Norway improved in the second half—most notably with a long-range effort from Signe Gaupset. A decisive moment came when Hegerberg missed her spot-kick, allowing Italy to regain control.

Italy will await the winner of Thursday’s quarter-final between England and Sweden in the semi-finals in Zurich. This victory has ended a 28-year wait for a major semifinal spot, thanks to Girelli’s heroics and a cohesive team performance.
