Islamic Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) has demanded the implementation of seven key points including elections based on the July Charter and introduction of proportional representation (PR) system.
The party’s top leadership presented these demands during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Agargaon office on Wednesday afternoon.
Following the meeting, party Presidium member Professor Ashraf Ali Akon and Senior Joint Secretary Gazi Ataur Rahman outlined their demands to journalists. Their seven-point charter calls for holding local government elections before national polls, ensuring proper training and neutral conduct of election officials, and mandatory deployment of military personnel at every polling centre.
The party insists national elections must be conducted under the legal framework of the July Charter while implementing the PR system. They further demanded trials for Awami League leaders allegedly involved in genocide, cancellation of the party’s registration, and legal action against extortionists and terrorists.
Gazi Ataur Rahman emphasised, “After the July uprising, we expected a comprehensive charter for state restructuring. Our fundamental demand remains holding national elections under this charter’s legal framework – a commitment we have yet to see materialise.”
He clarified that, while they don’t oppose February elections, the July Charter’s implementation must precede any polls. Warning of potential public mobilisation, Gazi Ataur said, “Should neutral elections remain not take place, this Election Commission will meet the same fate as its predecessors during Awami League’s tenure.”
The delegation was led by party Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad.
