Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has crossed a major milestone by collecting over Tk 20,000 crore in deposits through its agent banking operations, marking the highest share – around 42% – in the country’s agent banking sector.
Since its launch in 2017, Islami Bank’s agent banking service has expanded rapidly across the country, offering banking access to marginalised and rural communities through local agents. In just nine years, the bank has built the nation’s largest agent banking network in both deposit volume and customer base, according to a press release.
Currently, more than 5.3 million customers use Islami Bank’s agent banking services, with nearly half of them being women and the majority residing in rural areas. Daily transactions through this channel average over Tk 1,000 crore, highlighting its pivotal role in grassroots-level financial inclusion.
The bank has also emerged as the leading institution in disbursing remittance through agent outlets. In 2024 alone, Islami Bank’s agent banking received Tk 15,352 crore in remittances, which was over 54% of total remittance through agent banking. From January to June 2025, the figure stood at Tk 8,984 crore.
Beneficiaries across the country are now withdrawing remittance funds seamlessly, reducing dependency on informal channels like hundi and strengthening legal remittance flows into the economy.
Operating across 2,791 agent outlets in 472 upazilas, most of which are in remote areas, the bank ensures quality services under direct branch supervision. Through technologies such as the CellFin app, i-Banking, POS, and QR code-based withdrawals, Islami Bank has made banking simpler and more secure.
The bank’s rural development scheme (RDS), integrated into its agent banking, is also contributing to rural empowerment by distributing micro-investments up to Tk 5 lakh through 135 agent outlets.
The trust in Islami Bank’s Shariah-compliant practices, commitment to inclusion, agent familiarity, and use of modern tech have played key roles in achieving this Tk 20,000 crore deposit milestone.
