Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araqchi is slated to make an official visit to China on Monday.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei made the announcement about Araqchi’s trip during an interview with reporters on Sunday evening, reports IRNA.

According to Bagaei, the top diplomat will travel to China to attend a ministerial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

In addition to participating in the SCO meeting, Araqchi is scheduled to hold talks with Wang and several foreign counterparts attending the event. He is expected to present Iran’s positions on recent developments in the region and beyond.

China assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO for 2024-2025, and the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the grouping will be held in the city of Tianjin on July 15. Participants are expected to exchange views on SCO cooperation across various sectors and finalise arrangements for the upcoming summit.

Earlier on June 27, 2025, Iran’s defence minister Aziz Nasirzadeh attended a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China- and Russia-led regional security grouping that has grown in prominence as Beijing and Moscow look to build alternative international blocs to those backed by the United States.
