The Interpol is likely to publish a red notice against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitive accused for their alleged participation in ‘crimes against humanity’ during the July-August uprising.
“I believe that the Interpol will issue a red notice soon as it is now processing our application from NCB (National Central Bureau),” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said.
The NCB is the key wing of the Bangladesh Police for communication with Interpol. All Interpol member countries host an NCB, which connects their national law enforcement agencies with those of other countries and with the Interpol General Secretariat.
The IGP said after the issuance of the Interpol red notice, the police of the countries concerned would have the moral responsibility to arrest the fugitive accused.
“As the red notice has been issued by the ICT, the host country is liable to arrest them.”
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) wanted the fugitive accused in cases.
National central bureau officials preferring anonymity said application to Interpol to issue red notice includes former PM Sheikh Hasina, road and bridge minister Obaidul Quader, home minister Asduzzaman Khan, freedom fighter’s affairs minister AKM Mazammel, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanok, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, Dhaka south city corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, national security adviser to former prime minister Major General (Retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former state minister for power Nasrul Hamid, former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat and former Inspector General of Police(IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
They added that applications for Interpol red notice against former IGP Benazir was sent in February last year following appeal from a Dhaka court. The court issued the order following request from Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission.
