Inter Milan launched their Serie A campaign in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 demolition of Torino at San Siro on monday night, marking their biggest opening-day victory since 1961.
Marcus Thuram struck twice as Simone Inzaghi’s side overwhelmed their opponents, creating a flood of chances that might easily have produced an even heavier scoreline.
Inter stamped their authority from the outset, with Thuram heading narrowly over in the first minute. Their breakthrough came on 18 minutes when Alessandro Bastoni rose highest at a corner and guided a looping header inside the far post.
Petar Sucic then slipped Thuram through nine minutes before half-time, and the Frenchman finished confidently from a tight angle to double Inter’s lead. By the interval, Torino were relieved to be only two goals down after being repeatedly carved open.
Inter resumed after the break with the same intensity. Just seven minutes into the second half, Lautaro Martínez punished a misplaced backpass, slotting home for 3-0.
Thuram struck again in the 62nd minute, leaping to meet Bastoni’s cross and head past a helpless goalkeeper.
The rout was complete on 72 minutes when Torino once again gifted possession away. Denzel Dumfries intercepted a stray pass, exchanged passes swiftly, and Ange-Yoan Bonny finished calmly from close range.
It was a masterclass in attacking football from Inter, who secured their first five-goal win on the opening day of a Serie A season for 64 years. For Torino, disorganisation and sloppy mistakes turned the evening into a nightmare.
