Iñigo Martinez has completed a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr after parting ways with Barcelona by mutual agreement. Both clubs confirmed the transfer, with the Spanish defender signing a one-year deal that includes the option for an additional season.
The 34-year-old joined Barcelona in 2023 from Athletic Club and went on to make 71 appearances. He was a key figure under coach Hansi Flick, playing 46 matches last season and helping the team secure a domestic treble by winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa.
Martinez’s exit comes as a surprise to many fans, especially with Barcelona’s season set to begin in just a week. The move is expected to ease the club’s financial situation by freeing up between €12 million and €16.2 million in salary space, which could help in registering new signings. However, Barcelona still face challenges with the league’s financial rules and have yet to register players such as Joan García, Wojciech Szczęsny, Marcus Rashford, Gerard Martín, Marc Bernal, Roony Bardghji, Hector Fort, and Oriol Romeu.
Al Nassr, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, finished third in the Saudi Pro League last season. The club has also strengthened its squad with the signing of Portuguese forward João Félix and the appointment of experienced coach Jorge Jesus. Martinez’s arrival comes as the club prepares for the possible departure of Aymeric Laporte, who is in advanced talks to return to Athletic Club.
