Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, a night curfew has been imposed in the border areas of Meghalaya, India (next to Bangladesh) as part of heightened security measures.

According to Indian media reports, an official notification signed by District Magistrate of East Khasi RM Kurbah stated: “Under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), a night curfew has been imposed in the East Khasi Hills district. The curfew will be effective within a 1-kilometer radius from the zero line of the international border.”

The report mentioned that the curfew was implemented immediately due to security concerns and the complex border situation.

To prevent anyone from illegally entering Bangladesh or crossing into India during the curfew, “public movement along the border has been prohibited.”

As per the order, the night curfew will be in effect daily from 8pm to 6am and will be enforced for the next two months.

Under the curfew, any “unauthorized gathering of five or more people, processions, and the of carrying sticks, rods, or stones that can be used as weapons are prohibited.”

On April 22, 26 people were killed in a militant attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, conducting counterstrikes on what India claimed to be terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Following these events, Bangladesh called on India and Pakistan to maintain peace and resolve the issue through diplomatic dialogue.
