Gonoforum has stated that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s recent comment during his Japan visit – claiming “no party except one wants December elections” – is factually incorrect.

The party emphasised it has been consistently demanding elections by December after implementing necessary reforms for free, fair, and credible polls.

A meeting of Gonoforum’s Presidium Council was held Friday afternoon at the party’s central office, chaired by Presidium member SM Altaf Hossain. Attendees included General Secretary Md Mizanur Rahman, Presidium members Subrata Chowdhury, Jaglul Haider Afrik, Mesbahuddin, Mustaq Ahmed, Suraiya Begum, Selim Akbar, Shah Nuruzzaman, among others.

In a press release summarising the discussions, Gonoforum observed that the chief adviser and other advisers’ ambiguous statements about elections appear to be creating divisions among active political parties.

Gonoforum leaders asserted that establishing democracy, rule of law, and voting rights is essential to reap the benefits of the mass uprising. They criticised the interim government’s failure to adopt necessary reform frameworks and specific plans for this purpose, calling it “regrettable” that this responsibility is being shifted to political parties.

The party also noted recent discussions about Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s resignation and the government’s meetings with select political parties have further disappointed the nation. Gonoforum alleged the interim government is attempting to create divisions among active political parties by excluding Gonoforum from the recent dialogues.

Leaders further stated that over the past nine months, the government has failed to take effective measures to restore law and order or address administrative instability. No visible progress has been made on essential reforms for credible elections, eroding public support for the interim administration and creating doubts among political parties and citizens alike.

The Gonoforum presidium meeting demanded immediate announcement of a specific election framework. It also called for vigilance to protect the national unity achieved through July’s mass uprising for democracy and good governance, warning against its disruption by malign forces.
