The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has directed authorities to ensure protection for a prosecution witness, who recently testified in a crimes against humanity case filed in connection with the killing of six people in Chankharpul on August 5 last year, during the mass uprising.

A three-member panel, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order on Thursday after reviewing a prosecution petition supported by video footage and photographic evidence of alleged threat against the prosecution witness.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told the tribunal that following the witness’s testimony two days ago, individuals from the witness’ workplace began threatening activities, including staging processions and displaying derogatory banners.

The tribunal granted the prosecution plea and also formed a three-member probe committee over the protection of the witness.

It further instructed the local police station officer-in-charge and the head of the witness’s workplace to ensure the individual’s safety and remove all defamatory posters or banners.

The tribunal also spoke directly with the witness during the hearing to assess the situation.

According to the case documents, on August 5 last year, police opened fire on a peaceful student movement in Chankharpul, resulting in multiple casualties.
