International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has wrapped up the prosecution’s hearing in the case concerning the burning of six bodies following their murder during the July Uprising in Ashulia. The tribunal has scheduled the defense’s hearing for August 13.
The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued the order on Thursday. Justices Mohammad Manjurul Bashid and Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir are also part of the panel.
Prosecutors Mizanul Islam and Gazi M.H. Tamim presented the prosecution’s case, supported by prosecutors Faruk Ahmed, Saimum Reza Talukder, and Abduz Sattar Palowan. After concluding the prosecution’s arguments, the defense requested an additional week to prepare, which the tribunal granted.
Eight accused, including former Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Operations) Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi and former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Mohammad Shahidul Islam, were brought to the tribunal from prison for the hearing.
The case dates back to August 5 last year when six young men were shot dead by police in Ashulia, Savar. The victims’ bodies were then placed in a police van and set ablaze. Disturbingly, one of the victims who was still alive was doused with petrol and set on fire. The incident led to charges being filed with the International Crimes Tribunal on September 11, accusing the perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
The tribunal will hear the defense’s arguments in the next session on August 13.
