A hospital staff member was critically injured after being shot by unidentified assailants inside the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital compound in Banani on Friday night.
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Jamal Hossain, a former general secretary of the Class IV Government Employees’ Association, was attacked in front of the association office around 8.20pm. He sustained a gunshot wound near his right eye and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he remains in critical condition.
Jamal’s brother, Jasim Uddin, alleged the attack is linked to upcoming association elections, claiming Jamal had received threats related to his candidacy.
“At night, two masked men shot him in the head near the association office,” Jasim said. “We believe the attack is linked to the election.” Md Faruk, inspector in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed Jamal’s condition remains serious.
Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Russel Sarwar said police visited the scene, and are investigating the motive behind the attack and working to identify the perpetrators.
