A former leader of hospital employees’ association succumbed to gunshot wounds while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Monday.

The deceased Jamal Hossain, 40, was a staff member of the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH) in Mohakhali, and a former general secretary of Class-IV employees’ association of the institute.

The incident occurred on August 1, two masked unidentified assailants approached Jamal outside the employees’ association office and shot him in the head before fleeing the scene.

Jamal, who was critically injured, was admitted to the DMCH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following the shooting. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away on August 4, as confirmed by Mohammad Faruk, inspector in-charge at the DMCH police camp.

The attack is suspected to be linked to internal disputes surrounding the upcoming election for the Class-IV Employees Association at the hospital, in which Jamal was running for re-election as the general secretary.

Jamal’s family members have suspected that the attack was politically motivated, with some individuals allegedly threatening him over his candidacy.

Jamal’s elder brother, Salahuddin Sajal, mentioned that the bullet had entered the back of his head and exited near his eye. He said they suspected that the attackers were connected to the election and had warned Jamal to withdraw from the race.

In response to the tragic event, Jamal’s family has called for immediate justice, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the shooting. The police are continuing their investigation into the matter to identify the perpetrators and understand the reason behind the crime.
