Holy Ashura to be observed on July 6

The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), will be observed on July 6 as the moon for the Muharram month was sighted in Bangladesh on Thursday.

Therefore, the holy month of Muharram will start from Friday.

The decision was made at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held on Thursday evening at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka.

Dr AFM Khalid Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, presided over the meeting.

The meeting reviewed moon sighting information received from all divisional and district offices of the Islamic Foundation, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO).

Ashura, on the 10th day of Muharram, is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Shia Muslims will bring out Tazia processions in Dhaka marking the day.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of Yazid’s soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).
