Law enforcement agencies have heightened security in Chattogram ahead of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally, following recent untoward incidents during the party’s programmes in Gopalganj and Cox’s Bazar. A dog squad has been deployed to ensure the safety of NCP leaders.
The rally is scheduled to be held at Biplob Udyan near Soloshahar Gate No 2, with participants assembling at Bahaddarhat around 5:30 pm today (Sunday).
To prevent any untoward situation, a strict security cordon has been enforced around Biplob Udyan and its surrounding areas. Additional police forces have been deployed, and law enforcement remains on high alert.
NCP activists travelled from Chattogram to Rangamati earlier today at 9:00 am. The evening rally and gathering will be held in the port city of Chattogram as planned.
Police stated that security has been tightened in view of the recent violent incidents in Gopalganj and Cox’s Bazar. On Saturday night, senior NCP leaders stayed at ‘Motel Saikat’ on Station Road in Chattogram. A special police unit conducted a one-and-a-half-hour search there using a dog squad. No one was allowed to enter the three floors occupied by the leaders except for security personnel.
Arafat Ahmed Rony, head of NCP’s Chattogram media cell told, “We want to hold our rally and march peacefully. Senior leaders from both central and local levels will participate.”
According to Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) sources, strict surveillance will be in place both at the rally venue and along the route of the leaders. NCP leaders are expected to enter the city via Kaptai Road in the afternoon, and law enforcement will monitor their movement as well.
Chattogram Superintendent of Police Mahmuda Begum said the highest level of security has been ensured to allow NCP’s programme to conclude peacefully.
