The High Court has issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why Tk5 crore in compensation should not be awarded to the family of a five-day-old infant whose arm was allegedly broken due to medical negligence at Delta Medical College Hospital in Dhaka.
A HC division bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur passed the order following a hearing on a writ petition filed by the child’s father, Nurer Safah.
In addition, the court also questioned why disciplinary action should not be taken against the doctors accused of negligence. The bench directed a thorough investigation into the incident and ordered that a report be submitted within three months.
Barrister Md Shafikul Islam represented the petitioner during the hearing, while Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir appeared on behalf of the state.
The incident occurred after the newborn was admitted to the hospital on April 3. The father of the infant filed a writ with the High Court, seeking justice for the alleged medical negligence during treatment.
