Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 211 others, including several senior leaders of the now defunct Awami League (AL), have been named in a case filed over the killing of a shoe factory worker during the anti-discrimination demonstrations in Narayanganj in July 2024.

The case was lodged by Runa Begum, the victim’s mother, at Siddhirganj Police Station on Friday night, reports UNB.

Of the 212 individuals accused, 62 have been named, while the remaining 150 to 160 are unidentified. Siddhirganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam confirmed the filing of the case on Monday.

The named accused include former ministers Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Narayanganj-4 MP Shamim Osman, former Narayanganj city mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, Shamim Osman’s son Imtinan Osman Ayon, his nephew Azmeri Osman, former Narayanganj-2 MP Nazrul Islam Babu, Mojibur Rahman, president of the Siddhirganj Thana Awami League, and Yasin Haji, the unit’s general secretary.

According to the case statement, Sajal Mia (20) was participating in an anti-discrimination protest on July 20 when a group of allegedly armed AL supporters opened fire on protesters near a Dutch-Bangla Bank branch along the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway.

Sajal was shot in the abdomen and later died at a local hospital.

His burial took place swiftly and without a post-mortem, reportedly due to fears of further violance.

The complaint alleges that the attack occurred at the direct instigation of top AL leadership, with the shooting allegedly carried out under the supervision of Shamim Osman and in the presence of his son and nephew.
