Arsenal have officially completed the signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP in a deal worth up to £65.5 million.
The north London club will pay an initial £54.86 million (€63.5m), with a further £8.64 million (€10m) in performance-based add-ons. The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract and will wear the number 14 shirt, previously made iconic by Thierry Henry.
Gyökeres is expected to immediately join Mikel Arteta’s squad on their pre-season tour in Asia and could make his debut as early as Thursday, when Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong.
Gyokeres arrives following a remarkable two-year spell at Sporting Lisbon, where he scored an astonishing 97 goals in just 102 appearances across all competitions. During that time, he helped the Portuguese giants secure back-to-back Primeira Liga titles, a domestic cup, and finished as the league’s top scorer in both seasons.
At international level, he has also impressed, scoring 12 goals in his last 17 appearances for Sweden.
Born in Stockholm, Gyokeres began his career with IF Brommapojkarna, progressing through their youth system and netting 32 goals in 31 appearances at under-19 and under-21 level before making his senior debut at the age of 17.
He moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2018, spending loan spells at Swansea City, German club St. Pauli, and Coventry City, where he signed permanently in 2021. His performances in the Championship earned him a move to Sporting the following summer.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement at the new signing, saying:
“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyökeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.
“Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at both club and international level. His intelligent movement in the box and clinical edge make him a constant threat. We’re excited about what he brings to the squad and look forward to working with him.”
Sporting Director Andrea Berta added:
“We are so pleased with the excellent deal we have completed to bring Viktor Gyökeres to the club. He is an exceptional talent who consistently demonstrates the physicality, intelligence and work ethic of a top-level forward. We are confident Viktor will make a major impact both on the pitch and in the dressing room.”
Gyokeres becomes Arsenal’s latest summer signing in what has been a busy transfer window. He joins Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, Noni Madueke, and Cristhian Mosquera as new arrivals at the Emirates as the Gunners aim to end their five-year trophy drought.
