Grameenphone, Bangladesh’s leading telecommunications provider, has introduced a groundbreaking service allowing customers to purchase international roaming packs in taka using their mobile balance. This move, announced on 7 August 2025, eliminates the need for foreign exchange, offering a more affordable and convenient solution for Bangladeshi subscribers traveling abroad.
In a landmark decision, Bangladesh Bank has permitted the purchase of international roaming packs in local currency, marking a first in the country. This development aims to simplify the process of staying connected while abroad.
Customers can easily activate roaming packs via the MyGP App, selecting from a range of country-specific offers, including daily data, weekly data, combo packages, and a special 10-day travel package for Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Incoming SMS will remain free while roaming.
To activate the packs, customers must submit a declaration confirming possession of a valid passport, visa, and ticket (if applicable). They also agree that their roaming expenditure will not exceed BDT 6,000 per trip and BDT 30,000 per calendar year across all mobile numbers and operators.
Grameenphone’s Chief Product Officer Solaiman Alam expressed, “This is a historic milestone for both the telecom industry and our customers. We are grateful to Bangladesh Bank for supporting this initiative, which provides travelers with affordable, world-class connectivity, allowing them to stay in touch with loved ones using their existing mobile numbers.”
With over 15 million Bangladeshis traveling abroad annually, this initiative eliminates the need for foreign SIM cards, enabling seamless connectivity upon arrival. The service is expected to be especially beneficial for Umrah pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, providing them with the best roaming deals using their Grameenphone balance.
Grameenphone continues to innovate, prioritising customer convenience and global connectivity, according to a press release.
