The interim government, in a statement on Sunday night, reiterated that all those responsible for creating unrest and mob violence would be identified and brought to justice.

The statement came after a group of unruly mob created a spectacle, forcibly brought former Chief Election Commissioner K. M. Nurul Huda from his home and placed a garland of shoes around his neck, he was subsequently handed over to the police.

“Nurul Huda (former CEC) was arrested by police in connection with a specific case. The government is aware of the disorderly situation created by the mob and the reported physical assault on the accused. Once again, we urge all citizens not to take the law into their own hands,” the statement reads.

All accused individuals will be tried in accordance with the law of the land, and decisions on any pending cases or individuals will be made by the courts.

Assaulting the accused or subjecting them to physical abuse is illegal, contrary to the rule of law, and constitutes a criminal offense. Those responsible for creating a mob and inciting unrest will be identified, and law enforcement agencies will take appropriate action, it said.

A video widely circulated on social media shows a group of people forming a mob around former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda. He is seen being pelted with eggs and subjected to verbal abuse and physical harassment. Several individuals were seen broadcasting the incident live on Facebook.

The video shows, a man is seen placing a garland made of shoes around Nurul Huda’s neck. Holding him by the collar, the man delivers an aggressive speech while another individual takes a shoe from the garland and strikes the former CEC with it. A person in a police uniform can be seen standing nearby during the incident. Eventually, police removed the garland and took Nurul Huda into custody.

According to police sources, KM Nurul Huda lives with his family on the third floor of house number 29 on Road 1/A, Sector 5 in Uttara. Around 6 PM on Sunday, a group of people gathered outside his building and formed a mob. At one point, they entered the building and confronted Huda while he was in a lungi (a traditional garment worn at home).
